Sunday School is not meeting at the moment,
but will resume when we have enough participants ready to meet in person.
(Enter through side door on Cedar Lane nearest Nassau Street and go downstairs)
Children in grades K-8 are welcome!
Psalm 78
5 he (God) commanded our ancestors
to teach their children,6 so the next generation would know them,
even the children yet to be born,
and they in turn would tell their children.7 Then they would put their trust in God
and would not forget his deeds
but would keep his commands.
Sunday School at Church of Messiah
Messiah offers Sunday School classes to children three years old until confirmation age from 9 to 10 a.m., September through May. Each week we pray together, read the Bible, talk about it, act out stories, play games, draw, write, and make nifty things to remind us of what we have just learned. Children may make masks, puppets, dolls, crowns, armor, and even whole cardboard cities; they write stories and little plays to illustrate lessons. From time to time we use weird science demonstrations to underline a message. We have turned water into “wine” and used water, oil, food coloring, and an alka seltzer tablet to teach about the Holy Spirit. To keep everyone’s strength up, there are always snacks and beverages. Learning can use up a lot of energy!
The Bible contains many episodes which children love: Noah and the Flood, David and Goliath, Jonah and the big fish, Jesus and the Loaves and Fishes. It is important for children to learn these stories, to know what God’s people did, and what God did for them. Messiah’s Sunday School teachers also explore the bigger lessons behind these well-known events to help children and deepen their faith. Through our reading and learning God’s Word together, they learn about the immense love God has for us, the sacrifice Jesus made for our sake, and what we can do to show our love and gratitude to the triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
You don’t have to be a member to have your child attend Messiah’s Sunday School. It is free of charge, with no registration required. Your child can come occasionally or regularly, depending on your schedule and preferences.
